How to stop your Android phone from telling callers they are being recorded
When you record calls on Android phones using the Google Dialer app, both parties hear an announcement saying “This call is now being recorded.” This can create awkward moments.

When you record calls on Android phones using the Google Dialer app, both parties hear an announcement saying “This call is now being recorded.” This can create awkward moments during important conversations. Fortunately, there are ways to disable this announcement on Android devices.
Why Call Recording Announcements Exist
Google made call recording announcements mandatory in 2020 to comply with privacy laws in various regions, including India where call recording laws are particularly strict. These announcements serve to protect privacy and ensure legal compliance, as recording calls without consent is illegal in many jurisdictions.
Why this not is important
The notice serves as a form of obtaining consent. When callers hear the recording announcement and continue with the call, this can be considered passive consent in many jurisdictions. Without proper disclosure, recordings may be deemed inadmissible in court, undermining their utility in legal proceedings. Beyond legal requirements, the notice builds trust and transparency with customers. When people are aware of recording practices, they perceive businesses as ethical and transparent, which enhances customer loyalty and satisfaction.
The notice also respects individuals’ privacy rights, allowing them to make informed decisions about their participation in the conversation and ensuring their personal information is handled with proper consent.
Method to Disable Call Recording Announcements
Using TTSLexx TTS App
- Install the TTSLexx app from Google Play Store
- Open your phone’s Settings app
- Search for “text-to-speech output” or navigate to Additional Settings > Languages & Input > Text-to-speech output
- Tap on “Preferred engine”
- Change it from “Speech Services by Google” to “TTSLexx”
The TTSLexx app is a third-party text-to-speech engine available on the Google Play Store that users can install on their Android phones to disable the Google Dialer’s call recording announcement (“This call is now being recorded”).
Prevent Google Dialer Updates (Optional)
To ensure this method continues working:
- Open Play Store and search for Google Dialer
- Tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner
- Disable auto-update for this app
Alternative Method via Phone App Settings
Some Android phones offer a direct option to disable the announcement:
- Open the Phone app
- Tap the three dots (menu) in the top-right corner
- Select “Settings”
- Look for “Call recording” settings
- Under “Always record,” find and disable the call recording announcement option
Note that this method may not be available on all Android phones or versions of the Google Dialer app.
Alternative Method via Scramble the TTS
This method makes the announcement appear like a buzzer or quick noise and does not call for attention. To achieve this:
- Open your TTS and manipulate the “text-to-speech output” by navigating to Additional Settings > Languages & Input > Text-to-speech output or as may be available on your version of android.
- Swipe to increase “Speech rate”
- Swipe to decrease “Pitch” and that’s it.
After completing these steps, test the feature by making a call and recording it. The announcement should no longer play, allowing you to record calls discreetly.
Remember to use this capability responsibly and in accordance with local laws regarding call recording and consent.
