Samsung develops power management chips for DDR5

Samsung’s two new enterprise PMICs, S2FPD01 and S2FPD02, can reduce overheating with more than 90% energy-efficiency within the memory module The S2FPC01 offers power-saving benefits to PC DRAM modules in a compact form factor

Advanced in semiconductor technology and market, Samsung is a pioneer in several applications that its raw material can offer. After announcing the 512 GB capacity memory modules, The South Korean technology company has developed a new technology to deliver improved power management and hardware performance for DDR5 modules.

The company announced, on the morning of Tuesday 18, the first power management chips capable of reducing consumption and improving the performance of the new DDR5 memory modules in a significant way in real time.

The three announced devices S2FPD01, S2FPD02, and S2FPC01 differ little from each other. The first models mentioned focus on applications for data centers and enterprise servers that perform analytics processes, artificial intelligence and other tools that can cause the machine to overheat, for low and high density modules, respectively.

The third chip, in turn, will be applied to consumer-grade desktops and notebooks, reducing exacerbated heat generation and becoming 91%more efficient than standard hardware, as specified by Samsung in its newsroom. All models were manufactured in the 90-nanometer process.

The integrated power management circuits (PMICs) were previously integrated into the device’s motherboard and communicated with the DRAM through the bus. Samsung’s solutions will be integrated directly into memory modules, enabling faster responses due to its high-efficiency hybrid gate driver.

With the advantages, there is a counterpoint reflected in its final price. Memory modules equipped with this chip may see a significant increase in their value, so that the preference for the traditional standard still exists in the future.

For now, the prices of this new technology have not been revealed by Samsung, but PMICs have already been sent as sample to some partner consumers and are expected to hit the market soon.
