Back in September last year, Xbox made headlines by acquiring ZeniMax Media for some $7.5 billion and just this 1st April, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan revealed that the Japanese giant also plans to buy more developers for Sony’s family, which already has 18 studios.

In the interview given to the official PlayStation podcast, Ryan commented:

We are in a very good place with PlayStation Studios and have been in recent years. The critical success and commercial success of the games they’ve been making… that gave us permission to invest heavily in content creation.

Jim Ryan – President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE)

Jim hinted that Sony will continue to invest heavily in this playstation development division, but that’s not all. He also revealed that he has more plans involving Bungie , which was bought by PlayStation in January for $19 billion, and more companies.

We are increasing our studios organically and are growing through acquisition. We acquired five studios during the course of 2021, we are in discussions with Bungie and we have more planned. This is putting us in a virtuous cycle where success generates success.

Jim Ryan – President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE)

Despite the news, it’s too early to say what the plans are involving Bungie, but studio hires indicate that it should focus on a new third-person title. Unfortunately Ryan hasn’t revealed which studios would be joining PlayStation any time soon.

Finally, the CEO also commented on the decision not to include his latest games in PS Plus’s new plans, which were made official at the end of March with games of all generations of PlayStation.

Putting these games into a subscription service immediately after their release would break that virtuous circle, and we wouldn’t be able to invest the way we are currently capable. So let’s not do it. Let’s stick to the approach we have and served us well in many years now.

Just on 31st of last month Sony Interactive Entertainment announce their intent to acquire Haven Entertainment Studios Inc of Canada (First Canadian-Based Game Development Team Creating New AAA Modern Multiplayer Game for PlayStation).

It is worth knowing that Sony has confirmed that more titles will be added to its subscription service from June 2022, so we should see more news on it soon.
