5G in piloting mode in Ghana
Faster connectivity expected to significantly enhance internet connectivity, speed, and overall digital infrastructure, setting the stage for various advancements across multiple sectors. The outgoing government partnered with various industry players to establish a shared infrastructure for 5G, aiming to enhance connectivity and provide high-speed mobile broadband services to Ghanaians. A feat many industry players were against due to the high motivated dependency on foreign player.
The past treatment meted on 4G indigenous pioneers among low developmental attention to sustainable development and preservation of the countries telecommunication gains and over dependence on foreign actors slows down even shoddy attempts at rectifying the issues. As it stands most areas around the country have unknowingly used a 5G network however other issues prevents the smooth operation of the infrastructure making it unready for publicity. No one wants an unreliable 5G network that behaves like 3G.
The Ghanaian government is focusing on creating a neutral shared infrastructure for 5G, which will allow multiple network operators to utilize the same resources. This approach is designed to extend coverage to approximately 80% of the population, ensuring that the benefits of 5G technology are widely accessible. A good approach to remedy the fundamental problem stifling the growth of the industry as reinvestable incomes moves out of the country continuously in the past, creating inflation among other problems for the national growth.
The introduction of real 5G is going to spur economic growth, drive innovation, and improve the overall quality of life in Ghana. It is a technological leap and a critical component of national development positioning that can help the country to better compete in the global digital economy.
While the piloting phase of 5G in Ghana has faced delays, the government’s commitment to establishing a robust infrastructure and the scheduled launch in late 2024 indicate a strong push towards modernizing the country’s telecommunications landscape. The successful implementation of 5G is expected to have positive far-reaching implications for various sectors, enhancing connectivity and fostering economic opportunities. Ownership must be preserved to the country as lack of interest of foreigners and overdependence on them when the stakes are high has always raked havoc to our industries and growth.
