Sim Swap Fraud
Criminals convince mobile network providers to transfer the victim’s phone number to a new SIM card under the criminal’s control. This allows them to intercept verification codes and gain unauthorized access to the victim’s MoMo account.

Fake Agent Fraud
Criminals pose as legitimate MoMo agents or representatives to deceive users and steal their funds.

Phishing Scams
Fraudsters send fake messages or emails claiming to be from MoMo providers and trick users into clicking malicious links to steal their information.

Steps to Take on MTN Mobile Money Fraud

1. Use a Strong PIN

• It’s essential to use a PIN that is difficult for others to guess but easy for you to remember. If you currently have a weak PIN, you can change it by dialing the MTN mobile money shortcode *170#, selecting Wallet, and choosing Change MM PIN to set a new PIN.

2. Report Suspicious Activity Immediately

• If you suspect any fraudulent activity on your wallet, the best course of action is to report it immediately. You can call MTN on 100 or visit their nearest Customer Service Centre to make the report. It’s important not to wait too long to report any suspicious activity.

3. Avoid Sharing Account Details

• Avoid clicking on links in emails or texts that look suspicious. Do not send details of your mobile money account via texts or unencrypted emails. Immediately report suspicious emails to MTN Ghana or your bank.

4. Call MTN Customer Care

• Another way to report unusual or fraudulent cases is by calling the MTN Customer Care Centre. You can call 100 to talk to a representative. The process before a representative answers your call may be time-consuming, but it is worth the waiting and patience.

• 1515 is the unique code for all fraudulent Momo cases. Always remember to send the message immediately when it happens so you don’t forget important details. You can also go to the nearest MTN office in your locality and lodge a complaint to any of their representatives.

6. Promote Public Awareness

• Share the bad experience in the form of promoting public awareness, so that users can collectively combat the Mobile Money fraud and safeguard their financial well-being in the digital era.

7. Contact the Police if Necessary

• If you suspect any fraud issue on your mobile money wallet, you can report the case to any police station near you, and they will investigate it.
