Unreleased HBO documentary may reveal identity of bitcoin creator

A documentary produced by Home Box Office (HBO) may reveal to the world the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of bitcoin. That’s one of the promises behind Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery, which debuts on the Max streaming platform.

The production is directed by Cullen Hoback, who already has a history in internet investigations. He was responsible in 2021 for the documentary series Q: In the Eye of the Storm, which revealed the person behind the conspiracy political profile Q-Anon, which is quite influential in the United States.

The mystery of Satoshi Nakamoto

Satoshi Nakamoto is the name behind the paper describing the bitcoin cryptocurrency, published in November 2008. The article details the project and allowed the development of the project. Nakamoto even communicated with other community enthusiasts via email for a few months, when he disappeared without a trace.

His digital wallet continues to hold bitcoins without movement — he is one of the richest investors in the world just for holding a high amount of the cryptocurrency since its creation.

His identity, however, began to be questioned early on: the name would be a pseudonym and there are some suspects more “hot” than others. On the list, for example, are crypto pioneer Hal Finney, blogger and enthusiast Nick Szabo and Len Sassaman, a programmer who passed away in 2011, close to the time Satoshi stopped posting.

Format and Style

  • Documentary Length
The runtime is approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes.
  • Narrative Approach
Hoback combines interviews with key figures in the cryptocurrency space, historical context, and humor to unravel the complex story of Bitcoin’s rise.

In addition, some theories indicated that it would even be a group of programmers, something already discarded. The documentary, according to the director, will bring “a specific name” and details never before revealed “about a missing person”.
