How Tire Pressure Monitoring System Works

This system helps prevent accidents, improves fuel efficiency, and extends tire life.

Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) are essential safety features in modern vehicles, designed to monitor tire pressure and alert drivers when it falls below recommended levels. This system helps prevent accidents, improves fuel efficiency, and extends tire life.

Types of TPMS

There are two primary types of Tire Pressure Monitoring System namely;

  • Direct TPMS
  • Indirect TPMS

Direct TPMS uses sensors mounted inside each tire to measure the actual air pressure. These sensors continuously monitor tire pressure and can also provide temperature readings. The data collected by the sensors is transmitted wirelessly to a central vehicle control module. If a tire’s pressure drops below a preset threshold, the system triggers a warning light on the dashboard. This type provides real-time pressure readings for each tire accurate than that of indirect systems and does not require resetting after tire inflation or rotation

Indirect TPMS does not use dedicated pressure sensors. Instead, it relies on existing wheel speed sensors from the vehicle’s Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). By comparing the rotational speed of each wheel, the system can infer changes in tire pressure. When a tire is under-inflated, it has a smaller diameter and thus rotates faster than properly inflated tires. This difference triggers an alert in the vehicle’s computer system. This type is the cheapest in cost as it utilizes existing Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) sensors and is easier to maintain since it doesn’t involve battery-operated sensors.

This system helps prevent accidents, improves fuel efficiency, and extends tire life. When a significant drop in tire pressure is detected, a warning light illuminates on the dashboard. This light typically resembles a cross-section of a tire with an exclamation mark. Direct TPMS provides continuous updates on tire conditions, while indirect systems require calibration and may not offer precise pressure readings.
