Samsung unveils new telephoto lens that promises to reduce the thickness of cell phones

This new technology, known as ALoP (All Lenses on Prism), allows for the integration of larger and brighter lenses without increasing the overall height of the camera module, which is a common limitation in traditional periscope designs.

Samsung has recently unveiled an innovative telephoto lens design that aims to reduce the thickness of smartphones. This new technology, known as ALoP (All Lenses on Prism), allows for the integration of larger and brighter lenses without increasing the overall height of the camera module, which is a common limitation in traditional periscope designs.

Key Features of ALoP Technology

Unlike conventional telephoto modules that require vertical lens arrangements, the ALoP design positions lenses horizontally relative to the smartphone’s body. This configuration enables the use of larger lenses without adding to the phone’s thickness, enhancing both image quality and low-light performance. Samsung’s ISOCELL ALoP (All Lenses on Prism) technology introduces a transformative approach to smartphone telephoto cameras, significantly enhancing their design and functionality.

The new design incorporates a 40˚-tilted prism reflection surface and a 10˚-tilted sensor assembly, contributing to a more compact and flush camera module and which optimizes light transmission and improves overall image quality. This advancement helps minimize the camera bump typically seen in smartphones. The ALoP technology allows for a thinner camera module by positioning the lens array horizontally on top of the prism, rather than between the prism and the sensor as in traditional designs. This results in a 22% reduction in module length compared to conventional folded optics, contributing to a sleeker smartphone profile. This configuration supports high-quality, lossless zoom capabilities without increasing the bulk of the camera system.

The ALoP technology allows for the use of brighter lenses, which can significantly improve image quality in various lighting conditions, making it a promising development for smartphone photography. The lens features an aperture of f/2.58 at an 80mm focal length, which is brighter than many existing telephoto lenses. This larger aperture improves light capture, enhancing low-light performance and enabling clearer images during nighttime photography.
