It comes as a successor to VP8 and competes mainly with MPEG&#8217;s High Efficiency Video Coding. Beginning, VP9 was mainly used on Google&#8217;s video platform YouTube. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"gtech-migrated-from-ad-inserter-placement-2\" style=\"text-align: center;\" id=\"gtech-2475299325\"><div style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center;\" id=\"gtech-4049176014\"><a data-bid=\"1\" data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/gtechbooster.com\/linkout\/78935\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"notrack\" aria-label=\"auyvc003\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gtechbooster.com\/media\/2026\/03\/auyvc003.webp\" alt=\"\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/gtechbooster.com\/media\/2026\/03\/auyvc003.webp 1200w, https:\/\/gtechbooster.com\/media\/2026\/03\/auyvc003-768x768.webp 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\"  style=\"display: inline-block;\" \/><\/a><\/div><\/div><p>The emergence of the Alliance for Open Media, and its support for the ongoing development of the successor AV1, of which Google is a part, led to growing interest in the format. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast to HEVC, VP9 support is common among modern web browsers with the exception of Apple&#8217;s Safari browser. Android has supported VP9 since version 4.4 KitKat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parts of the format are covered by patents held by Google. Google LLC grants free usage of its own related patents based on reciprocity, i.e. <strong>as long as the user does not engage in patent litigation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"product-support\">Codec Usage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"microsoft-edge\">Microsoft Edge<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Microsoft <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.windows.com\/msedgedev\/2016\/04\/18\/webm-vp9-and-opus-support-in-microsoft-edge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a> in April 2016 that the Edge browser will support VP9 (and Opus).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"webrtc\">WebRTC<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>VP9 in WebRTC <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/web\/updates\/2016\/01\/vp9-webrtc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">became available<\/a> in Google Chrome 48 (stable) in January 2016, for both desktop and Android.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"google-chrome\">Google Chrome<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>VP9 decode support was first enabled by default in Google Chrome 29 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chromium.org\/getting-involved\/dev-channel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dev channel<\/a> (r206883) on 2013-06-26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mozilla-firefox\">Mozilla Firefox<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>VP9 decode support <a href=\"https:\/\/bugzilla.mozilla.org\/show_bug.cgi?id=833023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was first added to<\/a> Firefox Aurora (&#8220;pre-beta&#8221;) nightly builds on 2013-12-06.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"vlc\">VLC<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Experimental VP9 decode support was added to VLC in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.videolan.org\/vlc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">version 2.1.2<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ffmpeg-libav\">FFMpeg \/ Libav<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Search the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/git.videolan.org\/?p=ffmpeg.git&amp;a=search&amp;h=HEAD&amp;st=commit&amp;s=libvpx\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>FFMpeg codebase<\/strong><\/a> for recent libvpx-related commits<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Search the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/git.libav.org\/?p=libav.git&amp;a=search&amp;h=HEAD&amp;st=commit&amp;s=libvpx\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Libav codebase<\/strong><\/a> for recent libvpx-related commits<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-palette-color-3-color has-palette-color-1-background-color has-text-color has-background\">VP9 was initially used on Google&#8217;s video platform YouTube, but the emergence of the Alliance for Open Media, and its support for the ongoing development of the successor AV1, of which Google is a part, led to growing interest in the format.
