{"id":6192,"date":"2019-07-21T10:08:41","date_gmt":"2019-07-21T10:08:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gtechbooster.com\/?p=6192"},"modified":"2023-04-01T01:36:51","modified_gmt":"2023-04-01T01:36:51","slug":"finlands-full-stack-open-available-to-english-audience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gtechbooster.com\/finlands-full-stack-open-available-to-english-audience\/","title":{"rendered":"Finland&#8217;s &#8220;Full Stack Open&#8221; Available to English audience"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Finland&#8217;s educational system is famous for three reasons: its \npedagogical outlook, its technological excellence and its openness to \nthe world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"gtech-migrated-from-ad-inserter-placement-2\" style=\"text-align: center;\" id=\"gtech-3258357273\"><div style=\"margin-right: auto;margin-left: auto;text-align: center;\" id=\"gtech-4113965802\"><a data-bid=\"1\" data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/gtechbooster.com\/linkout\/17207\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"notrack\" aria-label=\"26001\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gtechbooster.com\/media\/2023\/01\/26001.jpeg\" alt=\"\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/gtechbooster.com\/media\/2023\/01\/26001.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/gtechbooster.com\/media\/2023\/01\/26001-768x960.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" width=\"500\" height=\"625\"  style=\"display: inline-block;\" \/><\/a><\/div><\/div><p>Sticking to the latter, University of Helsinki&#8217;s &#8220;Full Stack Open \n2019&#8221; which familiarizes students with the basics of modern web \napplication development, initialy taken in Finish only, has been made \navailable in English too, under the permissive Creative Commons BY-NC-SA\n 3.0 license:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWe wanted to make the course \navailable in English as a way to offer Finnish university education for \nfree to an international audience\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Learning part aside, the course aims to directly involve the \nparticipants with the industry, by initiating collaborations, hackathons\n and interviews upon graduating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However it is important to note this participation, obtaining  credits, submitting exercises as well as taking the final exam are  available for the students of the University of Helsinki only.The rest  of the world can enjoy it in its unsupervised version without all that  administrative stuff getting in the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main focus is on building SPA&#8217;s with React which inter-operate  over RESTful APIs with backend services build with Node.js. Also lately introduced is doing the same but over GraphQL.Other topics include  debugging applications, configuration, managing runtime environments and  interacting with NoSQL databases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Good programming skills are required as a prequisite, although surprisingly, &#8220;previous knowledge of JavaScript&#8221; is not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Split in 9 parts, counting from zero, the modules are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Part 0:Fundamentals of Web apps<\/li><li>Part 1:Introduction to React<\/li><li>Part 2:Communicating with server<\/li><li>Part 3:Programming a server with NodeJS and Express<\/li><li>Part 4:Testing Express servers, user administration<\/li><li>Part 5:Testing React apps, custom hooks<\/li><li>Part 6:State management with Redux<\/li><li>Part 7:React router, styling app with CSS and webpack<\/li><li>Part 8:GraphQL<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cutting edge material certainly.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To follow along, the source code can be found on the project&#8217;s github repo, of course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One could say that a bricks and mortar university that offers such  highly sought after material free of charge has lost its senses,  business wise.
