Think twice before cursing that ex who won\u2019t stop calling: A newly\nfound bug in Apple\u2019s FaceTime means someone could dial you and listen to\n your phone\u2019s microphone\u2014even if you don\u2019t pick up.<\/p>\n\n\n

In other words, if you see FaceTime ringing on your device, the\ncaller could already be listening to whatever it is you are saying, or\ndoing.<\/p>\n\n\n

How the FaceTime bug works<\/h2>\n\n\n

Open the FaceTime app and start to call a contact. Before that person\n picks up, swipe up and add your own phone number to the call.<\/p>\n\n\n

Once you\u2019re added, FaceTime assumes the connection is an active\nconference call and starts sending you the audio of whoever you\u2019re\ncalling\u2014even if that person hasn\u2019t picked up.<\/p>\n\n\n

Worse still, if the recipient of your call hits the power or volume button to ignore you, the victim\u2019s phone will start sending video, too!<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n

Protect yourself from the FaceTime bug<\/h2>\n\n\n

Until Apple resolves the issue, the best option is to turn off\nFaceTime in your phone or computer\u2019s settings. Here\u2019s how to do that:<\/p>\n\n\n

How to disable FaceTime on your iOS device<\/h3>\n\n\n
  1. Open the Settings app<\/li>
  2. Search for FaceTime and tap on the result<\/li>
  3. Ensure it is switched OFF<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n

    How to disable FaceTime on your Mac<\/h3>\n\n\n
    1. Open the FaceTime app on your Mac<\/li>
    2. Select FaceTime from the menu bar<\/li>
    3. Click Turn off FaceTime<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n

      Apple has temporarily disabled Group FaceTime<\/a> in response to this flaw, which appears to have fixed the problem for most users. A permanent solution is being promised with a software update this week.<\/p>\n\n\n
