Google Authenticator is a free mobile app that provides a way to enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on your online accounts. It generates one-time codes (TOTP) that you can use alongside your password to add an extra layer of security to your online accounts. When you log in to an account that has 2FA enabled, you’ll need to enter a code generated by the app in addition to your password.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To use Google Authenticator<\/a>, you typically need to first enable two-factor authentication in your account settings. Then, when prompted, you can use the app to scan a QR code provided by the platform service or manually enter a code to link the app to your account. What is changing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Previously, users could lose access to social networks and websites registered with Authenticator’s two-step verification if their smartphone was lost. This should no longer happen from today if the sync tool is enabled, making it possible to recover the login even without the original phone. Cloud syncing enables your Authenticator codes to be synced to your Google Account and across your devices, so you can always access them even if you lose your phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With cloud sync, Authenticator codes are synced with the user’s Google account and on their devices, so they can be accessed whenever needed, even in the event of phone loss,” the big tech explains. This update is important because the app now stores the single-use codes by storing them in the user’s account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A fallback for when you loose your device, even as that may strike a trust relationship with a an account for the fallback service to work. A situation that may not be all happy for all use cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outlook<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Although the focus of the update is on solving a problem most complained about by users, the changelog also includes new animations and improvements in the interface making navigation simpler and more intuitive. Google Authenticator currently has over 100 million downloads on the Play Store and a 3.6-star rating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
