Python\u2019s profile continues to grow \u2013 but at what\u00a0rate? According to David Robinson, data scientist\u00a0at Stack Overflow, it has a \u2018solid claim\u2019 at being\u00a0the fastest-growing major programming language.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June, Python became the most visited tag on\u00a0the developer community site for the first time\u00a0among high income countries, including hitting top spot in the US and UK and being in the top two almost everywhere else, behind either Java or\u00a0JavaScript.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is not a cause for celebration just yet \u2013 the\u00a0slowdown on Java can potentially be attributed to\u00a0the student off-season \u2013 but by using the STL\u00a0model, which can take into account seasonal\u00a0trends when predicting, Robinson adds it is \u201cclearly\u00a0on track\u201d to become the most visited tag in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The only language or platform with anywhere near\u00a0a similar growth pattern is R, with Go, Rust, and\u00a0TypeScript showing quicker acceleration but\u00a0naturally a much smaller size.\u00a0Python also shows impressive growth levels in the\u00a0BRIC countries of Brazil, Russia, India and China,\u00a0albeit still below JavaScript, Java, C# and PHP.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This correlates with data from IEEE Spectrum,\u00a0which put Python at the top of the charts ahead of\u00a0C, Java, and C++. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interactive study, which\u00a0combined 12 metrics with 10 different online\u00a0sources, was the result of a \u2018period of\u00a0consolidation in coding\u2019, meaning the big\u00a0languages would stay where they are with the\u00a0explosion of cloud, mobile and big data\u00a0applications, according to IEEE.\u00a0Yet Robinson explained the reasoning behind his\u00a0analysis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not looking to contribute to any <\/span>\u2018language war\u2019,\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

 he wrote. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe number of users of\u00a0a language doesn\u2019t imply anything about its quality,\u00a0and certainly can\u2019t tell you which language is more\u00a0appropriate for a particular situation.”<\/span><\/p>


\u201cWith that perspective in mind, however, we\u00a0believe it\u2019s worth understanding what languages\u00a0make up the developer ecosystem, and how that\u00a0ecosystem might be changing.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Part of this changing ecosystem could be down to\u00a0the rise of artificial intelligence and machine\u00a0learning, for which Python is a popular choice. As this Quora response notes, Python\u2019s advantages in\u00a0this realm include fast prototyping and frameworks such as scikit-learn.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
