AMD launches Hangar 21

AMD has regained its leadership in the CPU market in recent months, thanks to the cost-effectiveness of its Ryzen processors, and is expected to shoot even further ahead as the new Ryzen 5000 line of games becomes popular.

AMD does not intend to stop there, and has shown the world the Radeon RX 6000 family , based on the RDNA 2 architecture, which has proven worthy of fighting and even surpassing Nvidia’s rival GeForce RTX 3000.

Today, to demonstrate all the capabilities of its new graphics cards, AMD released a video from Hangar 21, a demo prepared specifically for the new Radeon GPUs. The production impresses with its visual quality, richness of details and the complex materials used in the objects of the scene.

As the brief narrative progresses, the video points out exactly what effects were applied, as well as a brief explanation of each. There are countless methods already established in the game industry, such as volumetric lights, God Rays, depth of field, physics-based materials and shaders and much more.

The highlights however are the new effects of the AMD FidelityFX functionality suite, as well as Ray Tracing, which uses here the techniques present in Microsoft’s DirectX 12 Ultimate. Both are combined to offer better performance, being “the best solution to maintain a high level of performance while some Ray Tracing effects are added”, in the words of AMD.

FidelityFX Ambient Occlusion (CACAO) joins the Ambient Occlusion generated by Ray Tracing to detail the contact shadows of the environment, while FidelityFX Stochastic Screen Space Reflexions (SSSR) is combined with Ray Tracing reflexes.

AMD took the opportunity to announce the arrival of Contrast Adaptive Sharpening, or CAS, for Horizon: Zero Dawn Complete Edition for PC, being the second FidelityFX effect to arrive in the game after the Downsampler (SPD). CAS can be activated together with Temporal Anti-Aliasing to increase the sharpness of the final image.

Other than that, three new effects will be added to the suite, namely Variable Rate Shading, which reduces the detail of parts of the image that are barely visible to the player, Denoiser, to reduce the noise generated by Ray Tracing, and Parallel Sort, which allows that developers organize data on the GPU much faster.
