The Digital Addressing System for The Republic of Ghana was officially launched yesterday by President Akufo Addo at a press conference in Accra. The location-based system which will divide Ghana into grids of 5m x 5m squares and assign to each, a unique address, known as a digital address (DA) is officially going to be the defacto standard for location information in the country.
AsaaseGPS, a Vokakom addressing system company is the known name behind this new system. The officially launched location system application is named “GhanaPostGPS.” which is the mobile app name for AsaaseGPS branded with a new logo and change in name from AsaaseGPS to GhanaPostGPS.
Reason for the change of name remains a puzzle that would be solved in the coming days; rumors suggest a possible spearheading of the project by Ghana Post which may be the reason to the change of name. Time would tell.
Hear come the addressing style of GhanaPostGPS.
According to the GhanaPostGPS website, the above picture is the format for the new addressing system.
The letter “A” refers to the region of the location (Ashanti Region), and “K” refers to the district (Kumasi District) “5028” is the unique address within the postal code. The Postal Code and the Unique Address come together to form the unique digital address.
The address above is for the Kumasi Main Post Office. In a deconstructed form, AK-039 is the postal code for the area, A refers to the region of the location (Ashanti Region), while K refers to the district (Kumasi District), 5028 is the unique address within the postal code. The Postal Code and the Unique Address come together to form the unique digital address.
The digital address is ON. We are soon going to miss the plantain seller at the junction 🙂 LoL.
